Metrics and versification constitute a natural meeting point for several disciplines including linguistics, literary studies, musicology, cognitive poetics, philology, linguistic anthropology, folklore, aesthetics, and more.

Paper and topics

We invite talks on any topic pertaining to some aspect of the general theme of the conference, including the following:

  • The relationship between meter and phonology
  • Textsetting, i.e. the alignment of text to music
  • Generative metrics
  • Cognitive poetics
  • The invention and variation of meters in literary poetics
  • Aesthetic effect of meter in poetry or song
  • Typology of meter
  • Cultural and linguistic influence on versification traditions
  • Social and psychological constraints on versification
  • The relationship between structure and performance of poetry and song

Each speaker will be given 20–25 minutes for presentation + 5–10 minutes for discussion. The audience will come from various disciplines and we ask speakers to bear this in mind so that presentations will be widely accessible.
