We offer a wide range of courses within Bilingualism, Scandinavian languages, Swedish, Swedish as a foreign language, Swedish for international students and employees, Swedish for second language teaching, Interpreting and Translation studies. We also give the test Tisus.

Please note that you have to change the semester yourself on the specific course or programme page, for the correct application information etc. (to the right on desktop, further down the page on tablet or mobile phone).
The majority of our courses at first and second cycle require a good command of Swedish. However, all of our courses in Bilingualism at the second-cycle level are taught in English. We also give courses in Swedish for international students and employees at Stockholm University, see below.

Swedish as a Foreign Language
The basic entry requirements for our courses in Swedish as a Foreign Language are:
- a successfully completed upper secondary education (or equivalent)
- knowledge of Swedish, corresponding to one semester of full-time studies.
The course is given on two levels and is preparatory for academic studies in Swedish:
- Intermediate Level (Förberedande kurs, NS0222)
- Qualifying Course in Swedish for University Studies (Behörighetsgivande kurs i svenska, NS0333).

Swedish for International Students
At the Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism at Stockholm University we offer a range of courses and programmes especially for international students. Proficiency requirements vary.

Swedish Language Courses for International Employees at Stockholm University
The courses are designed to give a basic comprehension of the Swedish language and culture to foreign employees working at Stockholm University, in order to enhance every day communication in the academic environment. The courses are concluded with a final test.

Practice your Swedish
Språkstudion at Stockholm University (SU) is the place for you who studies, teaches, does research or is interested in other aspects of languages. Språkstudion offers informal language support to SU and CIVIS staff in Swedish.
Digital Language Cafe
Språkstudion organizes Language Cafe sessions where you get the opportunity to practise languages in an informal setting, together with other students and native speakers. Welcome!

Currently, one course in Translation Studies is offered in English (at master’s level): Translating God.
The other courses and programmes in Translation Studies, including the Doctoral Programme, require well-documented, high proficiency in Swedish.

Master's programmes
Master's Programme in Language Science
We offer Master's Programme in Language Science with four different specialisations (see links below). The programme is administrated by the Department of Linguistics.

Language of instruction
In English
The language of instruction in the specialisation in Bilingualism in the Master's Programme in Language Science is English. This specialisation is open for international applicants with no knowledge of Swedish.
In Swedish
The specialisations in Scandinavian Languages, Swedish, Swedish as a Second Language require knowledge of Swedish.

PhD studies
PhD (doctoral) studies take four years and lead to a PhD, the highest academic degree in Sweden. At our Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism, you can get a doctoral degree in Bilingualism, Scandinavian Languages or Translation Studies.
As a PhD student, you are steeped in the scientific method. In short, you learn to think critically and analytically, choose the correct method to solve problems independently, and deepen your understanding of research ethics.
PhD studies give you competence in independently conducting research, a deep understanding of the subject area, and the ability to communicate knowledge and create the conditions for teaching others.
