The course addresses the development of paleoceanography and paleoclimatology as research fields, the evolution of the ocean basins, the archives: marine sediments, correlation and time scales, the modern climate system including ocean and atmosphere circulation, the hydrosphere, cryosphere and biogeogeochemical cycles, the physical, chemical and biological proxy tools, and trends and events in the evolution of the ocean- and atmosphere systems over the past 150 million years.

Admission requirements

Knowledge equivalent to 90 credits whereof at least 60 credits in Geology or Geoscience, including Marine geological and geophysical mapping methods 7.5 credits (GG4121), alternatively Marine geoscientific research methods 7.5 credits (GG4021), and Sediments and sedimentary rocks 7.5 credits (GG4020).

Field trip

A 2-day visit to the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Core Repository at Bremen University, Germany; V
Visual descriptions of deep sea sediment cores and palaeoceanographic interpretation
Week 49: Sun 12 to Wed December 2018 (2 days onsite + 2 travel days).
It is highly recommended that you participate in this visit. The cost to each student will be approximately 2500 SEK.
During the two days we come back from Bremen there are very focused lab based activities relating to the visit and your course project thus I would try and avoid missing these.

Form of examination

Assessment and course requirements
– Participate in all group activities and complete set exercises to a satisfactory standard.
– Achieve a minimum of an E grade (50%) in the written exam (Fri 23 November 2018, 10.15–15.00)
– Achieve a minimum of an E grade (50%) in the cyclostratigraphy assigment (submission deadline Fri 11 December 2018)
– Achieve a minimum of an E grade (50%) in the IODP Core-Assignment written report (submission deadline Fri 11 January 2019).
