Instructions for writing a project description in a PhD-application

The project description should not exceed 2,500 words excluding references and abstract. Write in a 12-point font with 1.5 line spacing.

  1. Title of the Project
The title should reflect the research problem and the subject-specific didactical and educational fields the project will address.

  2. Abstract: 150–200 words
Why is this study necessary and how will it be conducted? Provide a summary including the problem statement, purpose, methods, and any theoretical tools or method of analysis. How does the study contribute to the current subject-specific didactical and educational field and-or methodological development, and what could the societal relevance be?

  3. Introduction
The introduction serves as an entry point and brief overview of your research problem. It should clarify which knowledge domains and subject-specific educational research fields the study relates to. Summarise relevant prior research connected to your problem and identify what is missing. Then specify a focused aim and one or more researchable questions. You should also argue how the project is subject-specific educational in nature and which areas of teaching and learning in school subjects, and educational settings are in focus.

  4. Background and Previous Research
The background should provide the reader with a more developed understanding of what is already known from previous research in your area of interest or problem. In what way will your study provide new knowledge based on what is already known?

  5. Theory and Method
In the method and theory sections, either as two separate parts or combined, you should describe how your study or studies will be designed to address the purpose and answer your research questions. What methods for collecting and analysing data do you plan to use? What theoretical tools, if any, will be applied? Justify your choices in relation to previous research. Research ethics considerations should also be included.

  6. Discussion
Here, highlight your expected results and your contribution to the subject-specific didactical and educational research field you focus on, and where applicable, your contribution to practice. You may also discuss the role of the researcher and reflect on the feasibility of your study.

  7. References
You may choose your own referencing system, but the reference list must be consistently applied. APA 7 is generally recommended.

In cases where the applicant has used AI as a tool (e.g., ChatGPT) in the writing of the application, this must be stated and explained. For example, it could involve describing that it was used for language improvement or in other ways that have influenced the text.
