1. Ikuo Shimizu “fika: Kulturskillnad mellan Sverige och Japan”
  2. Daisuke Furuya “Förmedlarna som kopplade mellan Asien och Europa: De svenska erfarenheterna i det tidigmoderna Japan”

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Swedish-Japanese Relations the Japanese Division at Stockholm University has been granted STINT funding to examine the contents and conditions of a long-term partnership with the Swedish Division at Osaka University. This partnership is expected to stretch from specific comparative research, including mutual images of each other’s culture, to fundamental historical and theoretical issues related to the identity of (Japanese) Foreign Studies and (American/European) Area Studies. Following a seminar held at Osaka University in July 2018, this Stockholm Seminar presents talks by Prof. em. Dr. Ikuo Shimizu, the Japanese doyen of Swedish Studies (Skandinavistik) who has been awarded several Swedish prizes, for example, the Nordstjärneorden and the Svenska Akademiens Extra Pris, as well as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Daisuke Furuya, a specialist European history.

The seminar is open to the public, but will be held in Japanese. Its main aim is to further Swedish-Japanese academic exchange with regards to Area Studies, going beyond the constraints of the Japanese Division at Stockholm University.
